About the Denver Sailing Association

This page gives you general information about the Denver Sailing Association (DSA). Links to other pages provide more detail than here.

DSA's History

The Denver Sailing Association traces its roots to 1946, just after World War II.  Click here for a fuller history.

DSA's Purpose

DSA's primary purposes are

  • To enable and promote sailing and racing of small sailboats on the lakes in and around Denver, Colorado; and

  • To promote camaderie among sailors.

DSA's Character

DSA may not be what you expect in a yacht club:

  1. Informal: DSA is an informal club, without many of the traditional trappings people have come to associate with "yacht clubs". It retains many of its parking lot and launch ramp ways. People are more important than a fancy bar in a fancy building. Don't look for neckties or blue blazers; we'll mainly be in sailing clothes.

  2. Volunteer-run: DSA has no paid staff of any kind. All activities are carried out by unpaid volunteers. Everyone's expected to help carry the load.
  3. Western: We're maybe a little more adventurous and a little less tradition-bound than some.  We don't always follow the ways they do things elsewhere. We're accepting of new people. There's a "howdy" just waiting for you & folks eager to show you around..

  4. Affordable: Low overhead and donated time & effort keeps dues low.

  5. Top-notch Club: We'll put our sailors up against any. Oh, that's right we already have! DSA sailors have done well in national and world championships. Our race management is exemplary.

DSA's Location

Without a fixed facility, DSA is free to conduct events wherever sailing (including iceboating) can be done. But, most sailing events are held at Cherry Creek Reservoir in Cherry Creek State Park, in the southeast Metro Denver area. ( See the map.)

The operations base for most events is the marina on the west side of the lake. On Wednesday nights, keel boats will be rigging up at their slips or launching on the hoist. On Thursday nights, dinghies will be rigging in the storage lot or launching off the beach. the race committee boat will leave its slip near the Marina office about 30 minutes before racing starts.
