to Specifications The boat that performs like a dinghy, but SAILS like a keelboat.Comments from Santana Sailors:Low costSantana 20’s are fairly inexpensive compared to other keelboats. Because it is usually dry-docked, bottom maintenance and slip fees are usually minimal.High performanceFor its size, it performs very well. It is one of the faster 20 foot keelboats and can outperform many 25 foot cruising boats. It's particularly suited to the variable winds of Colorado; it accelerates quickly and can be quickly tuned & trimmed for changing conditions.Good investmentSantana 20s retain value more than some other boats. Older boats perform well and are competitive with the newest boats.Great entry boat for high-performance sailingAn S-20 is a complex boat. It has almost the same controls as larger keelboats and is a great learning platform for younger sailors. A Shock 35 owner once remarked "You have as many strings as I do."Examples of sail trim controls that can be adjusted "on the fly" include: mast bend, forestay tension, sail attack angle, sail depth, draft position, leech tension, sail twist, & pole height. In addition to sheet tension, S-20 sailors can instantly adjust, the traveler, backstay, aft lower shrouds, boom vang, & cunningham (including sometimes, a jib cunningham) They're everywhereSantana 20’s are sailed in the open oceans of Southern California, the Atlantic & Caribbean as well as inland lakes. This speaks to the flexibility and adaptability of this boat.Active fleetSantana 20s have a very active fleet in DSA and throughout the Rocky Mountain region. (Fleet 28 for the S-20 Class.) They sail in the Wednesday Night keelboat races with a full complement of sails and on Thursday Nights under main and small jib. They travel to the SAIL open regattas in numbers to "fleet".Strong Class AssociationThe Santana 20 Class has a strong association of owners and crew which keeps boats affordable and competitive. See the Class website at http://www.s20.org/.PHRF or One-Design?No need to choose. The Santana 20 is a good platform for either. Strong Class rules keep older boats competitive with each newer. And, it sails to, or better than, its rating in PHRF.
